Noticed that you have a 1.8.16 tag in the git repo but no tar file of
the release. I haven't followed the list before and my searches might
have been weak but I could not find anything why the file is lacking.
Should I start following the git tree for stable tags and not look at
the file list for releases?

yes, 1.8.16 doesn't have a tarball, because nobody has documented how to
create one. So following git tags might be the best option for versions to
come.
